A man has been arrested in the UK following allegations of racist abuse directed at Birmingham City midfielder Juninho Bacuna during their match against West Brom, which ended in a 1-0 defeat for Birmingham.
The incident reportedly occurred at The Hawthorns stadium on Saturday, prompting West Brom to confirm the suspension of a season-ticket holder in connection with the allegations. Bacuna informed officials towards the end of the match that he had heard racial abuse emanating from the Halfords Lane Stand.
Both West Brom and Birmingham City have disclosed that a 50-year-old individual from Dudley has been apprehended and interrogated on suspicion of committing a racially aggravated public order offense. Authorities from the West Midlands Police are now appealing for witnesses to aid in their investigation of the incident.
This is not the first time Bacuna has encountered racial abuse during a match. Last October, he was subjected to similar abuse by a home fan while Birmingham City secured victory against Huddersfield at St Andrew’s. In response, the club’s chairman, Tom Wagner, pledged to impose a lifetime ban on the perpetrator.
Following the recent incident involving West Brom, Birmingham City’s manager, Tony Mowbray, confirmed that Bacuna had reported hearing racially charged remarks and expressed his disappointment. Mowbray emphasized the recurring nature of such incidents, citing a recent occurrence involving Kasey Palmer of Coventry City during a match against Sheffield Wednesday. He stressed the need for severe consequences to deter individuals from engaging in racial abuse at football matches.
In solidarity with Bacuna and against racism, West Brom has pledged to issue lifetime bans to anyone found guilty of such behavior. The club affirmed its commitment to cooperating with West Midlands Police’s criminal investigation and stated its intention to provide Bacuna with the necessary support. The club also reiterated its staunch stance against all forms of discrimination and emphasized its determination to ensure that perpetrators of racism face severe legal consequences, in addition to being banned for life from attending matches at The Hawthorns.
